Joker has been one of the most amazing movies the world has come across in a long time. It's Greatest Achievement, A New Way of Story-Telling, never ever witnessed before by Cinema Goers.
And it is true to say, that A Sequel could potentially destroy the Uniqueness & the much-savored Ambiguity of the phenomenal movie.
People always crave for a Sequel. They have this urge and this need for Continuance, but in Joker's case, it will have the Paradoxical Effect.
The Sequel will try to explain all that was left unsaid in the first movie and this will cause The Loss Of Continuance.
It will shut out everything the movie was gunning for.
THESE ARE THE REASONs WHY I THINK JOKER SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE -
( The above statement is Not Incel-Insensitive )
1) ONE OF A KIND -
There is no doubt that this movie is a One Of A Kind Phenomenon. No earlier movie has, especially Comic Book movie, has even come close to the concept of this one.
2) DEMANDs NO APPLAUSE -
This movie has no false qualms about it. The moviemakers know exactly what they have created and served to the movie-going public.
It is unabashedly an Anti-Hero movie. Depicts a story without the need for Validation or Justification to the actions of the Protagonist.
The most important trait is that it demands NO APPLAUSE for the actions of the Central Character.
We sympathize with the character but we don't feel the need to coax him forward, to validate his actions.
It's an amazing art to show the character in such a way so that the audience exactly knows that WHAT THE CHARACTER IS DOING IS WRONG, yet APPRECIATE THE CHARACTER's PERFORMANCE OF AGONY.
To put it simply, it could have been any one of us, in the situation Joker found himself in. But we know that the path he took is not the only one he could have taken. This brings me to the next point.........
3) AMBIGUOUS & UNRELIABLE NARRATION -
This point is where the MOVIE STRUCK GOLD. The ambiguity of the storyline is somehow acceptable. There is no animosity towards JOKER - No matter how Unreliable His Narration might have been. The audience welcomed it, even liked the idea of the Joker not exactly telling us what part was real and what part was a Joke.
Isn't a Joker supposed to do exactly that? MAKE JOKEs.
4) OUTSIDE THE DCEU -
Although Joker is very much the part of DC Extended Universe, the movie itself is somehow remote from it. Even though it does provide us with an Origin Story to the Batman, we can never be certain IF that is in fact WHAT happened or HOW it happened so as to drive Little Bruce Wayne to morph into the Caped Crusader.
5) MULTIPLE ORIGIN STORIES for MULTIPLE DEPICTIONs of JOKER -
Todd Philips gave us a Mind Fuck with this one. The unreliability of Joker's narration extends to an Endless Abyss it would seem. Not only does the movie leave us Unsure, but also it leaves the question whether, in fact, ARTHUR FLECK IS THE REAL JOKER ?
This theory states that the Real Joker who would later become the ARCH-NEMESIS of Batman, is infact someone else who has been witnessing Arthur Fleck's journey as the Rebellious Icon that he becomes unintentionally but one that he savors nonetheless.
"Finally, they are starting to notice"
This theory makes sense if we keep into account the Age Difference between Bruce Wayne and Arthur Fleck.
6) THE OPEN-ENDED CLIMAX -
I think we can say that we really want to know about the whole Questionable Paternity Thing, whether Arthur Fleck is, in fact, Thomas Wayne's bastard son. Because that would explain a lot, I mean a lot, as to why Joker has such hate for Batman.
But my opinion is that sometimes a Villian is a Villian even without a back story of injustice, a story of being scorned, a story of being denied, love.
For more on this, check out my article for my interpretation on What The JOKE is
' Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, I Think I Know What The Joke Is '
A sequel to this masterpiece will destroy the idea of Multiple Origin Theories, which to me personally is very exciting.
The open-endedness of it all.....
Is Thomas Wayne Arthur Fleck's father?
Is Peggy Fleck Arthur Fleck's mother?
Is Arthur Fleck suffering from a Mental Disease?
Is the whole story nothing more than a part of an elaborate delusion?
Is Arthur Fleck the actual Joker?
I can certainly say that although there is an insatiable itch in my head that wants to know, but I think I can even do without.
Let's practice NOT-KNOWING for a change.
This is my take on Why Joker Should Not Have A Sequel. What do you think?
