So, Joaquin Phoenix's JOKER. That's what I'm going to be calling the movie. It might be Todd Philips' but.......... let's let that one hang.
Spoilers Ahead !!!!!!!!
Let's start with the truth. I was disturbed after watching this movie. I was angry the whole day. My mother couldn't understand what had gotten into me. I felt frustrated. I lashed out without reason.
Later on when I analysed my feelings, I realised I was feeling trapped. I have seen people suffer from mental illness in my family and watching movies based on that, I have always felt like I can't breath. It always makes me feel like I am a ticking bomb, though not outwardly unstable, just waiting for something to tip me over and then I'll come into my true self like a Raging Flood, RagingFlood, RagingFlora...............
Don't misunderstand me, the fact that the movie made me feel this way, is proof enough that the Movie did it's job right. It is a Masterpiece. It has shown us the demented ways circumstances around us can make us crazy. Even though nothing should be used as an excuse for bad behavior. But how could we say that it is infact bad behavior. Are we that narrow minded that we cannot fathom the possibility that someone could be actually sick.
Simply saying, "Get Over It" is not the medicine people who are suffering, need.
But then an effective treatment is also not available. According to me, the most difficult Science out there is Psychology and Psychiatry. It's clearly not a "Man' s Job". Where is God when we need God.
Okay. Now, it's time for THE JOKE that we won't get apparently.
Now this is MY INTERPRETATION of What The Joke Maybe.
The movie makes us want to believe that the narrative is true. That a man who is shunned by society in a cruel way, with no fault of his own, can turn into a Crazy Man. A Man who did not have a chance from the beginning. Whose adopted mother herself was crazy and her string of random boyfriends physically assaulted the child, and caused a head injury so severe that he incurred permanent damage to his brain.
It makes you ponder if he would have been better off in the orphanage or on the streets.
Or if he wasn't adopted, even then his fate was somehow sealed because he turned out to have the same mental disease as his mother. Cursed Genetic Endowment.
This is what the movie made us believe. Okay. Now the following is what I think could have happened.
I think that the WHOLE MOVIE WAS A JOKE. A Joke that the Arthur had been narrating to his Psychiatrist in Arkham State Hospital. An elaborate Joke where he just told a story that people EXPECTED TO HEAR of someone who suffers from a mental disease. A broken man, a nasty childhood that led him to become a certain way. But I think that is what the Joker was joking about. He was what he was, even if there was no background story that could explain it. A master manipulator. A trickster. He just killed the Psychiatrist in the end. There was no motive for it as he always tried to show in his backstory. That killing was just unprovoked and remorseless.
